Newborn photographers generally come in 2 varieties—those that are willing to come to you and those that prefer you come to them. Both can be great. But how do you decide which is right for you? To help with that, let's look at some pros and cons for both at-home newborn photo sessions and in-studio newborn photo sessions.

A Newborn Photo Session In Your Home

Pros

  • Highly personal
  • Convenient

Cons

  • Unpredictable

Sometimes called lifestyle newborn photography, a newborn photo session at home takes place, you guessed it, in your home. One of the major positives of this kind of newborn session is that your photos will be created in the space(s) where you are building those precious memories that you want to last forever. You can show off that nursery you worked so hard on before baby arrived. Or, if you've been confined to your bed for a whole week, you can take your photos there. Your little one can be photographed in that crib handed down from generation to generation or in your arms while you sit in that chair where you rock them to sleep.

A newborn photo session at home is also very convenient. You don't have to worry about packing up everything you think your little bundle might require on a trip out. And, if this isn't your first arrival, you don't have to arrange for a babysitter to take care of big brother or sister while you're away. But what about the downsides to newborn pictures at home?

It can be more difficult to find a good newborn photographer in your area who offers this style of newborn session. Highly-trained professional newborn photographers usually prefer the volume and convenience that a studio provides to their business rather than the unpredictability of working somewhere new. Then, there are those newborn photographers who don't have a studio space of their own so they offer in-home sessions but they lack the necessary skills to provide consistent results from home to home due to widely varying space and lighting conditions.

A Newborn Photo Session In the Studio

Pros

  • Consistent
  • Convenient

Cons

  • Less personal

Perhaps the best thing about booking a newborn photographer who works in a studio is that their images will be very consistent from client to client. If you love what you see in their portfolio, your chances of being happy with your photos are very high. On top of that, studio photos of your baby are going to be among some of the highest quality (provided you find a good photographer). There's a reason most commercial photography (as well as tv and film-making) is done in a studio.

Another benefit to an in-studio newborn photo session is convenience. You might be thinking, "Wait! I thought convenience was a reason to have a newborn session at home." You're right, both types of newborn sessions are convenient in slightly different ways. For some people, the stress of having a stranger visit their home just after they've had a baby and the rooms are messy and there's a pile of take-out boxes on the table and that dirty-diaper scent wafting the hall is too much to handle. They feel compelled to clean the whole house before the photographer arrives. For these people, the idea of leaving the mess at home and going to the studio seems much more convenient.

The downside to a studio newborn session, though, is that they tend to be far less personal. The studio space itself doesn't hold any meaningful value to you or your family. And your baby will most likely end up in the same wraps surrounded by the same props as the last dozen babies.

So which newborn photography session should you choose—at-home or in-studio? If you like the work of a local studio newborn photographer and that sounds more appealing to you, go ahead and reach out to them. You can even ask them if there are ways of making the session more personal for your little one. If you prefer the highly personal style of at-home newborn photos, start looking around for a local newborn photographer offering that style of session. But make sure you do your homework. You'll want to see abundant examples of their work in different homes before you book.
